Action plans - how they work
At the end of a guidance interview you will usually agree your steps forward with the adviser. This is known as your action plan. It's a step-by-step approach to working towards your goals and it gives you a plan to stick to. Here's an example of an action plan.
Claudine had recently arrived in the UK from France and was finding it difficult to get a job. She wasn’t sure if UK employers recognised her qualifications from France and she thought her CV might not be good enough.
Claudine had experience in media work and was hoping to get back into the media or to work for a charity, possibly as a fundraiser.
After chatting to the adviser it became clear there was a lot that Claudine could do to give herself a better chance of getting the kind of work she wanted. Together they came up with an action plan which Claudine could take away and work through in her own time.

How this could help |
| Contact NARIC (National Academic Recognition Information Centre) | NARIC can find out what Claudine's qualifications are quivalent to in the UK and could offer her a certificate to show this. There is a charge for this service but a discount is available if you apply on-line. |
| Contact Skillset, the Sector Skills Council for the audio visual industries | Skillset offer free in-depth careers guidance on this sector from people who’ve actually worked in the audio-visual industries. They might be able to give her valuable hints and tips on how to make a successful application. |

| Send CV to a Careers Coach by emailing guidance@learndirect-advice.co.uk | If Claudine doesn't have access to the internet she could email her CV from a learndirect centre or a UK online centre. The adviser will study her CV and ring her back to offer suggestions on the presentation and content. There is no charge for this service. |
| Look at the CV advice on the learndirect advice website | Getting an interview can depend on your CV. It's Claudine's chance to show an employer she's got the skills and experience needed, and that she's the right person for the job. |
| Get feedback from a recent interview for a fundraising job | The employer might be able to provide information which could be helpful in preparing for future interviews. |
| Call the local volunteering bureau | Voluntary work with charities would help Claudine gain experience and help her decide if she wants to work for a charity in the future. |
